An assessment of ergonomic issues in the home offices of university employees sent home due to the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND: As millions of workers have shifted to telework, special accommodations for with respect ergonomics may be required ensure the workforce remains healthy. METHODS: A survey about home office and discomfort was sent faculty, staff, administrators by email completed 843 individuals. RESULTS: Over 40%of participants reported moderate severe (severe low/middle back pain, in eyes/neck/head, upper back/shoulders). Laptops (always often) were widely used (85%) most using laptop monitor (55%) all respondents. Further, less than 45%of seating conditions as having adjustable arm rests. CONCLUSION: teleworking makeshift offices becomes more common, risk significant potentially serious musculoskeletal disorders result from poor static postures. Companies need accommodate allowing them take chairs, external monitors, keyboards, mice laptops are insufficient, ergonomically.
